It has been twenty years since the first-generation Highlander was introduced at the 2000 New York auto show. Now, it is finally time for the most recent version of its three-row family crossover. In comparison with the third-generation model it takes over from, this latest Highlander model has a curvier and sportier design. Just from the fact that there were more than 250,000 Highlanders sold in North America last year, it can be expected that this redesigned version will be everywhere in no time.
Although the third-generation Highland was already quite large, it was still quite small compared to its competitors, such as the Honda Pilot. This 2020 model, however, comes with an additional 2.4 inches in overall length. Toyota claims that this extra length can benefit the cargo area, which makes the Highlander a practical hauler for your things. Even though the new model is not taller than the previous one, it has become wider, making the cabin more spacious and comfortable for everyone in the car.
One of the most interesting things about the 2020 Highlander is the fact that it is built with Toyota’s latest TNGA flexible architecture. You may not know this, but the same architecture is used to build the Prius, C-HR, Corolla, RAV4, Camry, and Avalon. The great thing about TNGA is that it minimizes complexity, production spending, as well as weight. This means that it will come with better fuel efficiency, improved handling, and higher ride quality.

The 2020 Toyota Highlander has gotten a serious tech-feature update. This newest model offers support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition, you also have the option to upgrade to 12.3-inch touchscreen or stick to the standard 8.0-inch touchscreen. The new model also features three USB ports up front, two USB ports in the second row, a digital rear-view mirror, and several optional comfort features, including heated second-row seats.
There are two engine options that come with the 2020 Toyota Highlander. The first option is a 3.5-liter V-6 with an eight-speed automatic. This is great for 295 hp and 263 lb-ft of torque. Moreover, it is equipped with the optional all-wheel-drive system, which should deliver 21/27/23 mpg city/highway/combined. Another option is a hybrid engine that integrates a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with an electric motor and a CVT to make 240 hp. Initially, the hybrid will only be offered with front-wheel drive as an effort to lower cost and optimize fuel efficiency.
