Toyota Corolla: The History
Who would have thought when the first generation Corolla was released in Japan in 1966 and in America in 1968 that it would become a worldwide phenomenon. Now one of the most popular vehicles ever, Toyota Corollas of all shapes and sizes can be found gracing city streets around the world. The Corolla family has grown exponentially from the humble 2/4 door sedan or 2 door station wagon setups from the 60s and Corollas can now be had as a sedan, coupe, hatchback, and soon as a SUV or Crossover. We’ll briefly go through the history of this iconic ride!
First generation (E10): 1966-170
The “most wanted car by the market” first generation of the Corolla shook up the vehicle market, earning high praise, and quickly becoming the best vehicle in its class. Powered by either a 1.1L or 1.2L engine putting out 60HP or 65HP, controlled by a 4-speed manual or a 2-speed automatic, the first generation Toyota Corolla isn’t going to be winning any drag races in our time, but was made popular by a rising demand for private car ownership that was beginning to take off in the mid 60s.
Third Generation (E30-E40-E50-E60): 1974-1979
Skipping over to the 3rd generation Corolla, this generation featured harder lines, giving the Corolla a more aggressive look compared to previous generations. This generation of Corolla was available as a sedan, hardtop coupe, wagon, sports coupe, liftback, and even a 2 door panel van! With engines outputting a range of 55-75HP, there were more choices than ever for the perfect Corolla!
Tenth Generation (E140, E150) 2006-2013
Skipping into the 21 Century, the 10th generation Corolla was focused on taking over the market. Poised to satisfy needs from Europe, North America, and Asia, Toyota crafted the 10th Generation Corolla with a focus on delivering some of the latest technology and safety features, cabin space, and performance, all while preserving the Corolla heritage and offering a user friendly operation. Available with a plethora of gasoline and diesel engines that output 123 hp to 158 hp, that is paired to either a 4-speed manual, 5-speed manual, or 5-speed automatic. This generation of Corolla was a massive hit worldwide, with many of them still seen on the roads today thanks to it’s standard setting durability and reliability.
Eleventh Generation (E160, E170) 2012-present
The current generation of Toyota Corolla was completely redesigned with new aggressive and sporty styling, with a lower center of gravity, the new Corolla was made to stand out rather than blend in. Now packed with Toyota’s suite of safety features, Toyota Safety Sense (TSS), and features like a sunroof, backup camera, and touch screen infotainment system, the Toyota Corolla is the best value that you can get with a smaller sedan. Now powered by either a 4 cylinder engine providing 132hp or 140hp running a new 5 Speed automatic CVT or a 6 Speed manual, the Toyota Corolla is meant to get you places – in comfort and style.
